How does the media and it's subjective perception affect the way this incident(Singapore Swimmers in hot water) was handled?

The media and it's subjective perception has resulted in this incident to become out of control ever since it started by assuming the boys is mocking the American team even though they only smiled. Once the reporter took a picture and wrote a report about the Singapore swimmers smiling after the results of the American team was known had resulted in other media companies publishing it to the world, including Sports illustrated maazines. In all the reports, singapore swimmers is depicted as mocking the American team, when the only comfirmed fact is that they smiled. This may not be true. One of the swimmers involve in this incident, Zach, said 'we were both smiling, not because we were happy that the American team were disqualified-it was really hard to believe, that was all it was'. This shows that there's a possibility that the swimmers is not mocking the American team. The media's perception of this incident is that the Singapoore swimmers are mocking the American team, thus they are depicted as mocking them. If the media had consulted the boys first before publicising the event, the media may not have depicted the boys as mocking the American team and the public's view most likely would have follow suit. This incident then may not been so bad and the boys involved would not have been in trouble. To conclude, the media's perception of a certain event can change the way it reports the event, which may result in the public having a misunderstanding.

Does rap put teens at risk

I feel that rap does put teen at risk. Most rap music contain violence or sexual lyrics. When teenagers is constantly exposed to such music, they may sub-consiously be thinking about those violence or sexual lyrics more often. The situation is made worse if the rap music is accompanied by video, because those violence or sexual images have a greater impact since it's visual. The videos may then be constantly replayed in their mind. After some time, they may feel that those activities is morally correct, not something wrong, then enact them.

However, not all teenagers exposed to rap music may end up enacting those sexual or violent activities. Rap music can only expose them or let them know that such activities is gong on. Whether or not the teenagers believes that it is all right to enact them or not depend on a lot more factors, for example family, friends, moral education e.t.c.

In conclusion, rap music can only create awareness for teenagers regarding those sexual or violent activities thereby only increasing the probability that teenagers will enact them. Hence rap music does not cause teens to commit those act, but only put them at risk of commiting those act.

consider the merits and demerits of censorship and state your reasons why you think it's un/necessary.

Censorship is limiting or eliminating information that the media show or tells the public. Limting information means limiting a particular media product only to a certain age group while eliminating means literally removing a particular part of a media product.

Through censorship, children can be protected from things that would adversly affect their mental growth, for example sex and violence. By eliminating certain information, it can help to maintain social and political peace as racist or scurrilous political remarks could lead to riots between races or wars between country if those remarks were to be published.

However censorship is not perfect. It does have it disadvantages. Since censorship eliminates certain information, this implies that the media may not report the complete truth. This may results in the public having some misunderstanding resulting in wrong judgement.

To conclude, i feel that censorship is necessary even though it may cause some misunderstanding because maintaining social and political peace is vital in a country's development.

I have learnt that the media do not always present to the masses the complete truth. The media usually can choose to broadcast the positive or negative side of a certain event with the intention to control our understanding of it. The US-Iraq war is shown to the people by the mass media as a war against terrorist, to eradicate terrorist's activities in Iraq. However, from the article, it shows that the motivation for the US to declare war on Iraq could be the lure of the oil industry in Iraq as the article wrote'Bush's friends and colleagues in government are on the inside track of industry(oil)'. This possibility whcih could have a negative effect on the reputaion of the US is not broadcast by the media, thereby showing that the media is trying to make the public perceive the war as a righteous move, a move towards achieving world peace and not for the benefit of the US. In conclusion, i have learnt from the article that the media can manipulate our comprehension of a certain event by selectively broadcasting information about the event.
